The State Theatre is home to The Modesto Film Society (MFS) which presents films on the third Sunday and on the first Tuesday, a series referred to as Cinema Club, nine months out of the year. On Sunday afternoons, members see classic cinema, usually in a 35mm format, that replicates the experience of film-goers when the films were first screened. On Tuesday evenings, members view contemporary films that are followed by thought-provoking discussions led by film industry insiders, professors and sometimes the filmmakers themselves. Members join for a "season," which runs from September through June of the following year, and are able to attend nine films in either the classic or contemporary series while enjoying free or discounted admissions to films. Founded in 2005, the society now boasts a membership of more than 225 dedicated members who gather to view classic feature films, cartoons, newsreels and short subjects, or contemporary art, independent and foreign films destined to become the classics of tomorrow. Depending on your level of support, benefits may include complimentary and discounted tickets, a newsletter and film notes, advance notification of upcoming films, priority admission, and invitations to special film events at the opening and closing of the MFS season. Members also enjoy the social benefit of attending these monthly events and often dress in costumes or period dress appropriate to the film being screened.
