The State Theatre is home to both The Modesto Film Society (MFS) and The State Theatre Cinema Club. MFS is an independent, community-based non-profit organization dedicated to preserving America’s cinematic heritage. Most of the MFS film are presented in a 35mm format, which replicates the experience of film-goers when the classic films were first screened.
Founded in 2005, the society now boasts a membership of more than 225 dedicated members who gather on the third Sunday of the month, 10 months out of the year (excluding June and August), to view classic feature films, cartoons, newsreels and short subjects. The society is celebrating its sixth season -- and the 76th anniversary of The State -- in 2010.
MFS memberships are for the calendar year and, depending on your level of support, benefits may include complimentary and discounted tickets, a newsletter and film notes, advance notification of upcoming films and priority admission. Members also enjoy the social benefit of attending these monthly events and often dress in costumes or period dress appropriate to the film being screened.
