Jeremiah Tower:  The Last Magnificent

Fri. 4/28 - Wed. 5/10

(R-Doc) 1 Hr. 57 Min. (Digital) In English (Documentary)

After premiering at Tribeca, New York Magazine called Jeremiah "A rare, honest, and compelling glimpse into the life of a legendary chef.”  Produced by Antony Bourdain, the film covers the life of Tower, who became one of America’s first celebrity chefs and one of the most influential figures in the history of American gastronomy. Tower gained fame as a pioneer in the California cuisine movement at Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse in Berkeley, during  the 1970s and founded San Francisco’s  Stars restaurant in the mid 1980s. The original bad-boy chef, Tower was known for his Studio 54 lifestyle, over-the-top brash personality, and his public feud with Alice Waters.  Tower went on to launch his own legendary Stars Restaurant in San Francisco. Stars was an overnight sensation and soon became one of America's top-grossing U.S. restaurants. After several years, Tower mysteriously walked away from Stars and then disappeared from the scene for nearly two decades, only to resurface in the most unlikely of places: New York City's fabled but troubled Tavern on the Green. There, he launched a journey of self-discovery familiar to anyone who has ever imagined themselves to be an artist. Featuring interviews by Mario Batali, Anthony Bourdain, Ruth Reichl and Martha Stewart, this delicious documentary tells the story of the rise and fall of America's first celebrity chef, whose brash personality and culinary genius has made him a living legend.

With its acrobatic zest, swing dancing was a perfect expression of defiant resilience during the Great Depression. For contemporary enthusiasts, it’s an antidote to the emotional disconnect of the so-called connected age. Swing buff Susan Glatzer, a film executive turned director, makes these points in her first documentary, Alive and Kicking, without pushing them; she lets the dancers’ ecstatic moves do most of the talking, and they’re persuasive. There may be no fancy filmmaking steps in Alive and Kicking, but the jaw-dropping improvisations and physical intimacy of the dancers make it an action film par excellence — joy-fueled and gravity-defying. ~ The Los Angeles Times

Fri. 5/5 - Fri. 5/19

(R) 2 Hrs. (Digital) In English (Drama, Mystery & Suspense)

When Stan Lohman (Richard Gere), a popular congressman running for governor, invites his troubled younger brother Paul (Steve Coogan) and his wife Claire (Laura Linney) to join him and his wife Katelyn (Rebecca Hall) for dinner at one of the town's most fashionable restaurants, the stage is set for a tense night. While Stan and Paul have been estranged since childhood, their 16-year- old sons are friends, and the two of them have committed a horrible crime that has shocked the country. While their sons' identities have not yet been discovered and may never be, their parents must now decide what action to take. As the night proceeds, beliefs about the true natures of the four people at the table are upended, relationships shatter, and each person reveals just how far they are willing to go to protect those they love.
