Modesto Film Society presents:
Fiddler on The Roof

Sun. August 20

(G-1971) 3 Hrs.

Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway play, this 1971 musical tells the story of Tevye and his five daughters who live together in Tsar-controlled Russia. It explores with humor, drama, and--of course--song, the intersecting challenges surrounding the Jewish family, whose cultural and religious traditions are threatened by multiple outside influences. Fiddler on the Roof was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, winning three (including Best Original Score - John Williams).

I, Daniel Blake

Opens Fri. Aug. 18

(R) 1 Hr. 40 Min. (Digital) In English (Art House & International, Drama)

Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, the latest from legendary director Ken Loach is a gripping, human tale about the impact one man can make. Gruff but goodhearted, Daniel Blake (Dave Johns) is a man out of time: a widowed woodworker who's never owned a computer, he lives according to his own common sense moral code. But after a heart attack leaves him unable to work and the state welfare system fails him, the stubbornly self-reliant Daniel must stand up and fight for his dignity, leading a one-man crusade for compassion that will transform the lives of a struggling single mother (Hayley Squires) and her two children. Graced with humor and heart, I, Daniel Blake is a moving, much-needed reminder of the power of empathy from one of the world's greatest living filmmakers.

Step documents the senior year of a girls' high-school step dance team against the background of inner-city Baltimore. As each one tries to become the first in their families to attend college, the girls strive to make their dancing a success against the backdrop of social unrest in the troubled city.
“This ebullient chronicle of a Baltimore girls step team's senior year matches a fascinating, worthy subject with unabashedly joyful filmmaking.” ~ Variety
